More illnesses confirmed in Rose Acre Farms Salmonella recall

IN farmers have issued a warning after at least 22 people have fallen ill. Thirty-five people from nine states have gotten sick in total, with 11 people sent to the hospital.

Due to epidemiologic, laboratory, and traceback evidence from the CDC, the source of the salmonella was identified to be white-shell eggs produced by Indiana-based farm Rose Acre Farms, though the investigation is ongoing.

Recalled eggs were sold in grocery stores and to restaurants under multiple brand names, including Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Crystal Farms, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value, Nelms, Publix, Sunshine Farms, and Sunups.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday that the number of illnesses had risen to 35 - an increase of 12 cases since the initial egg recall notice.

As of May 10, the CDC reports that 35 illnesses have been reported across Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

At least 16 people who were ill said they ate egg dishes from different restaurants. The possibly tainted eggs were distributed from the farm between January 11 and April 12.

If the mother's fetus is RhD positive, the antibodies will pass through her placenta which will cause Rhesus disease. He is one of fewer than 50 people in Australia known to have the antibodies, the blood service said.

The CDC's salmonella fact sheet states that the bacteria is responsible for about 1.2 million illnesses, 23,000 hospitalizations, and 450 deaths each year in the US, with over 80 percent of the illnesses traced to tainted food. It can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps in sickened individuals; for older adults, infants and people with weakened immune systems, salmonella can cause more serious, even life-threatening, complications. Due to the interval between the time symptoms are first reported and the time the CDC gets more information from state and local officials, more cases are likely to be confirmed in the coming days.

Rose Acre Farms' recall is the largest involving eggs since 2010.

Salmonella can contaminate the breakfast food product when infected chickens transfer the foodborne bacteria to the eggs before the shells are formed, the Centers for Disease Control reported. It says that it has never experienced any problems with its North Carolina farm and that a recall was done in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
