More people sickened by egg recall


Nine states, including NY and Pennsylvania, have been affected by a massive egg recall that has led to a salmonella outbreak and sickened 35 people. The eggs came from Rose Acre's Hyde County Farm in North Carolina.

The Indianapolis Star reported the egg recall is one of the largest to occur since 2010, when 500 million eggs were recalled from an Iowa producer amid almost 2,000 reported illnesses linked to salmonella. The affected Rose Acre Farms recalled eggs are identified with plant number P-1065 and Julian date ranges of 011 through date of 102 printed on either the side portion or the principal side of the carton or package.

The outbreak is linked to Rose Acre Farms, whose eggs were distributed to restaurants or sold at major grocery stores such as Walmart and Food Lion.

The US Food and Drug Administration traced the outbreak to a farm in Hyde County, North Carolina, which is part of of Rose Acre Farms, which claims to be the second-largest supplier of eggs in the country and is headquartered in Indiana.

The sick people live in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

The eggs were sold under the following brand names: Country Daybreak, Crystal Farms, Coburn Farms, Sunshine Farms, Glenview, Great Value, as well as Food Lion stores, according to the FDA website.

The FDA recommends that you discard any eggs from with the listed plant number and lot codes from affected brands and to ask for refund if it applies. FDA analysis of the samples revealed that the same rare strain of Salmonella Braenderup that caused the illnesses was present at the Hyde County Egg facility, tying the facility to the outbreak.
