Teacher accused of drowning raccoons during class

A Florida mother said her son was made to stand with his fellow high school classmates this week and drown two raccoons and an opossum. "It's awful. It still does make me sick to my stomach", the mother, who did not want to be identified, told WKMG.

"It made me sick. It's awful. It still does make me sick to my stomach", she said, according to Channel9.

"They finally took the cage out of the water, and they trapped it into another smaller cage, where the top of the cage would go down into the water", he said. "They should have trapped the animal and had somebody take them and relocate the animals", the mother commented. In addition to holding down the drowning raccoons, the students and their instructor would use water hoses to spray the raccoons and opossum in the face in an effort to speed the drowning process.

According to local press reports, the teacher was angry with the raccoons because they ate the chicken, which the pupils grew up alone as a school project.

ClickOrlando also spoke to a parent who said her son came home in tears over the incident.

In one video, students can be seen pouring water into the raccoon's cage as it sits in the garbage bin.

"For all you that don't know the man he is such a great person as one of his students I can personally at that he has gone above and beyond for not only me but to anyone that has ever come up to him and asked for his help".

The teacher is on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Dewie Brewton, who has been a teacher at Forest High School since 2006, has majority support from his students who are rallying together in his defense.

Maier said the school district is "appalled" by the actions of the teacher.

A spokesman from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the agency is investigating the way in which the raccoons were killed.

It released a statement on Tuesday saying it was "looking into" the incident and that officers are determining "the legality of what occurred", according to OCALA.

The incident is alleged to have happened at the same high school where a student was left wounded in a shooting last month.
