US Gulf Coast braces for Alberto battering


The US states of Alabama, Florida and MS have declared an emergency ahead of subtropical storm Alberto expected to make landfall on Monday, authorities said. Tornadoes are not expected on the Coast, the weather service said.

The season is likely to be "near or above normal", according to the hurricane center. Outside of storm chances, look for very warm and muggy highs in the mid-upper 80's. A tropical storm warning was discontinued from Florida's Anclote River to the Suwannee River.

As for potential impacts, with a more eastern track of the system, the heaviest rains will likely be seen in East Alabama with the strongest winds up to 35 miles per hour possible in West Alabama Monday night into early Tuesday morning.
