6 children burned in Guatemalan volcano eruption arrive in Galveston


Guatemalan authorities warned that the Fuego volcano was showing signs of greater activity on Tuesday night.

Rescue brigades continue to search for victims amid the tons of ash and sand after Fuego's eruption, the most powerful in more than four decades.

Six children who have been burned by the volcanic eruption in Guatemala on Thursday arrived in Houston in the US state of Texas for medical treatment.

The 37-year-old woman lived in the nearby village of San Miguel Los Lotes, which was devastated by a wave of superheated material and debris.

The institute said Wednesday that 28 of those recovered bodies have been identified. The confirmed death toll has climbed to 99.

"The conditions are critical in the areas near Fuego volcano", said Eddy Sanchez, Director of the National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology, adding that initial eruption was the most violent explosion since 1974. Standing amid the wreckage on Wednesday, he said any bodies below are surely severely damaged, and if heavy machinery comes, it will tear up their remains. Rescuers poked metal rods into the ground, sending clouds of smoke pouring into the air in a sign of the super-hot temperatures still remaining below the surface, which firefighters said reached as high as 750 to 1,300 degrees Fahrenheit in some places.

On June 3, the Fuego volcano affected, mainly, the departments of Escuintla, Chimaltenango and Suchitepequez, declared for 30 days in a state of public calamity that same day. After a cellphone call to Castillo's brother, rescuers arrived and took the family to safety.

"Nobody wants to go back there. We could not get anything out", Castillo said.

The national disaster agency says it's suspending recovery efforts because of the danger to its workers.

"We already have data with names and locations where there are missing persons and that number is 192", Sergio Cabanas, head of Guatemala's disaster management agency, told reporters.

The children died in the town of San Miguel Los Lotes.
