About 2000 Children Separated From Parents While Illegally Crossing the US Border

Almost 2,000 children were separated from their families after illegally crossing the U.S. border in April and May, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Friday.

From April 19 through May 31 this year, 1,995 minors travelling with 1,940 adults who said they were the children's guardians were separated due to the policy, CNN quoted DHS spokesman Jonathan Hoffman as saying on Friday.

Asylum seekers who go directly to official crossings are not separated from their families, except in specific circumstances - such as if officials can not confirm the relationship between the minors and adults, if the safety of the children is in question, or if the adult is being prosecuted.

Some immigrant advocates have said women were being separated from their infants - a charge homeland security and justice department officials flatly denied.

The reasons for separation include illegal entry, immigration violations, and the possibility of criminal conduct on the part of adults involved.

Last month, the administration began implementing a policy that leads migrant children to be separated from their parents when apprehended at the border.
