BC loses 12000 jobs in May

Barrie's unemployment rate dropped in May, but remains one of the highest in the country.

Unemployment in the region has risen sharply from the beginning of 2018, when the rate was recorded at 3.8 per cent, with just 1,500 unemployed - right on Stats Canada's threshold where so few are unemployed the agency can't release the data because of confidentiality reasons.

But Statistics Canada says, overall, the economy lost 75-hundred jobs last month as full-time positions fell by 31-thousand and the loss was only partially offset by gains in part-time work.

Overall, Canada's unemployment rate is unchanged for the fourth consecutive month, at 5.8%.
