Attorney General Jeff Sessions defended the practice of separating children from their families at the border under certain conditions, arguing Monday the administration is "doing the right thing".

"You play a critical part in fulfilling these goals, and I thank you for your continued efforts in seeing to it that our laws-and as a result, our nation-are respected", Sessions said in the memo.

On the child abuse charge, the complaint says Sessions has advocated for and implemented "practices that indefinitely separate thousands of young children from their parents" and "holding thousands of children in mass incarceration facilities with little to no structured educational or socio-emotional support".

The family separations began after Sessions announced this spring a "zero-tolerance" policy that all unlawful immigrants will be prosecuted as criminals. Those laws are created to protect the best interests of children and "a child's best interest is served by remaining with his or her family", they wrote in the letter.

"This balanced approach is especially critical when we are faced with persons seeking entry who may be eligible under established USA laws for the protection of asylum, as they flee persecution, horrific violence, or danger in their home countries", they said.
