North Korean leader Kim Jong Un succeeded in appearing like President Donald Trump's equal during the first historic encounter between the two leaders on Tuesday, according to South Korean media.

They will meet for a very short time, just the two of them and their translators.

Mr Lee is slated to meet Mr Trump today at the Istana. The US President arrived in Singapore last night aboard Air Force One, which landed at Paya Lebar Airbase.

He's been a veteran diplomat on the issue of North Korea for over a decade.

Despite the initial high stakes of a summit meant to rid North Korea of its nuclear weapons, the talks have been portrayed by Trump in recent days more as a get-to-know-each-other meeting.

Sitting across Mr Kim and his team at the larger meeting was the USA leader, his chief of staff John Kelly, secretary of state Mike Pompeo and national security adviser John Bolton. Economic adviser Larry Kudlow told CBS News in Washington that "Kim must not see American weakness", adding that by criticizing new tariffs, Trudeau was "pouring collateral damage on this whole Korean trip". "Thank you very much".

"We are prepared to take what will be security assurances that are different, unique, than America's been willing to provide previously".

"I think within the first minute - my touch, my feel, that's what I do", the president said, touting his deal-making experience as a businessman.
