New Zealand's prime minister has named her baby daughter Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford, as she and partner Clarke Gayford left hospital.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern carries her newborn baby Neve Te Aroha Ardern Gayford as she walks out of the Auckland Hospital in New Zealand, June 24, 2018.
"Neve" (pronounced like leave) means radiant, light or snow and "Te Aroha" (TAY AH-row-ha) means love and is also the name of the mountain and town near where Ardern lived as a child.
"When we met her we thought she looked like she suited the name", she told reporters.
The name "Neve" was chosen for their daughter because it means "bright and radiant".
In a cute touch, Ms Ardern thanked New Zealanders for their gifts, especially the hand-knitted ones.
Donald Trump tells Republicans to 'stop wasting time' on immigration
Earlier this week, Trump signed an executive order to keep children with their parents who cross the border illegally. About 9,000 such family units have been caught in each of the last three months, according to USA border authorities.
"Te Aroha. was our way of reflecting the amount of love this baby's been shown before she even arrived".
Ardern said like many parents she and Gayford had struggled to settle on a name before the birth and had a shortlist prepared.
Ms Ardern made her first public appearance on Sunday since giving birth to her daughter on Thursday.
All the presents for baby Neve would be passed on to another family once they had been used, Ms Ardern said.
"We've gone for simplicity, because Clarke with an "e" has caused all sorts of problems, and Jacinda with a "d", she said.
The island nation, with a population of 4.5 million, was in the grips of a baby-induced glow of optimism in recent days with many social media users dubbing the baby the "Prime Miniature" while they waited for her name to be announced.
European Union tariffs on U.S. products have gone into force
German automakers face broader threats from Trump's shift away from decades of USA policy supporting open trade. He told automakers at a White House meeting in May that he was planning tariffs on some imported vehicles.
Having spent time being cared for within the public health system amidst a time where there is a lot of industrial action in the sector, Ardern said she continued to feel that the people who work in our public health system are "absolutely wonderful".
Proving that she's not that different from mums everywhere, Ardern had the briefest moment baby brain, accidentally referring to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as the Duke and Duchess of Essex.
"Thank you so much for your best wishes and your kindness".
Ms Ardern, 37, is only the second world leader to give birth while in office after former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto who delivered a baby girl in 1990.
Ms Ardern has become the first elected world leader to take maternity leave, but for the next six weeks will still be on call for major government issues. She has now become the first woman in the country's history to give birth while in office.
She posted a photo to her Instagram account, saying: "Welcome to our village wee one".
