U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un shake hands during an expanded bilateral meeting at the Capella Hotel on the resort island of Sentosa, Singapore, June 12, 2018.

He also noted that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has clearly been identified to lead future negotiations with a North Korean counterpart and that Mr. Trump separately said National Security Adviser John R. Bolton "will be working on the denuclearization issue, which is very positive". It's possible North Korean officials will seek a firm commitment from the South on stopping its military drills with the United States.

"My whole life has been deals", he said.

Trump's own chest-thumping tweet seemed reminiscent of the "Mission Accomplished" banner flown behind President George W. Bush in 2003 when he spoke aboard a Navy ship following the USA invasion of Iraq.

Most experts assess that the North Korean leader got the better deal at the summit.

Singapore: Security tight ahead of Trump-Kim summit
USA allies are anxious that Trump could upend decades of global precedent, NPR's Mara Liasson reported on Weekend Edition Sunday . Menendez spoke Sunday on ABC's "This Week" as President Donald Trump arrived in Singapore ahead of Tuesday's talks with Kim.

USA officials said it was unclear what types of training involving US and South Korean troops might cross into Trump's now forbidden zone of "war games".

Trump said, 'We're flying planes in from Guam, we're bombing empty mountains for practice. "No longer - sleep well tonight!"

Donald Trump has dismissed concerns about the widely condemned human rights record of the North Korean dictator, Kim Jong-un, praising him as a "tough guy", a "smart guy" and a "great negotiator".

Despite the uncertainties, Trump talked up the outcome of what was the first meeting between a USA and North Korean leader in six decades of hostility. They believe that proposing open markets in North Korea is like having a submarine open its hatch for fresh air: the legitimacy of the government, one of the most repressive in modern history, relies on keeping the country hermetically sealed.

While Trump and Kim concluded their summit in Singapore by signing a joint statement that promised "complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", it did not specify what that process would entail.

Trump and then try to stab him in the back on the way out the door", trade adviser Peter Navarro said on Fox News . Mulroney said he thought Trudeau's closing remarks were "fairly benign and certainly didn't warrant any attack".

On the issue the world has been most fixated on - North Korea's pursuit of a nuclear arsenal meant to target the entire US mainland - Trump and Kim signed a joint statement that contained a repeat of past vows to work toward a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.

The president was also "unequivocal" with Kim about the need to return abductees from Japan seized by the North in the 1970s and 1980s, Pompeo said at the news conference.

"No, I think China really would like to see no nuclear weapons, you want to know the truth".

Asked specifically about verification of Pyongyang's denuclearization and whether it will be irreversible - objectives outlined by Trump but unmentioned in the statement - Pompeo said: "The modalities are beginning to develop".

"He (Trump) made it very clear that the condition precedent for the exercises not to proceed was for productive, good faith negotiations being ongoing", Pompeo told reporters.
