Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the USA and rates have been climbing steadily for years.

"And, unfortunately, our data show that the problem is getting worse", Anne Schuchat, MD, principal deputy director at CDC, said at a press briefing, reports Medscape.

The CDC found that between 1999 and 2016, suicide rates rose by 25.4 percent nationally.

Earlier this year Gov. Ralph Northam signed a new law that requires the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services to report its progress and activity on suicide prevention every year.

Professor Julie Cerel, president of the American Association of Suicidology, expressed the view that having better reporting standards could account for some of the increase, but also pointed to a lack of adequate funding for mental health research and preventative care.
