Huawei Mate 20 may feature a 6.9-inch AMOLED display

Huawei has reportedly placed an order for 6.9-inch AMOLED panel with Samsung Display.

The report said Huawei, China's largest smartphone maker with more than 20 percent market share, may have chose to play it bigger with aims to take an edge in the burgeoning premium market at home where consumers prefer bigger-screen phones to scribble complicated Chinese characters.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 is expected to come with a 6.38-inch screen, while one of the three new iPhones later this year is rumored to feature a 6.46-inch screen. This puts it in the time frame of the Mate series which usually launches in the fourth quarter of the year.

The device is said to be powered by Huawei's proprietary Kirin 980 chipset, a triple-lens camera arrangement on the back of the phone and an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Still, a almost 7-inch screen would be huge. That is all that the report reveals about the Mate 20.

Huawei's decision to opt for a massive panel for its next smartphone is likely driven by its desire to remain the top vendor in its home market of China. And the company is aiming to maintain the status quo.

The Huawei Mate 20 may feature the largest screen size amongst high-end flagships. Chinese consumers prefer handsets with a large display so this makes sense for Huawei to target the Mate 20 at them.

The screen is expected to be the biggest highlight of the Mate 20.
