Kim, Trump arrive in Singapore for landmark summit

There's wild speculation about how Kim will perform on the world stage, although one question was answered Sunday: His grim-faced, well-muscled bodyguards marched alongside his armored limousine at one point in Singapore, just as they did when he met the South Korean leader in April.

The US President flew to Singapore from Canada, where he participated in an especially contentious G7 summit that came after he triggered a trade dispute with several of the US' closest allies.

North Korea has rejected giving up its arsenal unilaterally and defends its nuclear and missile programs as a deterrent against what it sees as USA aggression.

The two leaders are staying in separate hotels, not far from each other. While Kim and his delegation are now staying at the St. Regis Hotel amid heavy security.

The meeting was Trump's only scheduled public event on Monday.

It "would instead lay out practical steps with requisite commitments from North Korea that demonstrate that it understands, accepts and is committed to achieving denuclearisation as the U.S. defines it", said Enos, who is also in Singapore to watch the proceedings. We are where we are because Mr Trump has taken a sword and sliced his way through conventional diplomatic behaviour.

As he disembarked from Air Force One, Trump told reporters that he feels "very good" about his prospects. There was no need to.

There's just no recent precedent for the gamble Kim Jong Un is taking.

"Even the Agreed Framework, we knew it failed in 2002 for sure, but for a long time we thought it was successful", Terry said. Kim also released a statement in September that said he will "surely and definitely tame the mentally deranged US dotard with fire".

The talks would also involve "building a permanent and durable peacekeeping mechanism on the Korean peninsula and "the issue of realising the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula", the agency said".

For his part, Trump accused the summit host, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, of lying, and threatened to end trade with G-7 nations that he said use unfair practices. In order to prevent the collapse of the talks and subsequently, North Korea's return to the mainstream after decades of worldwide isolation, advisors (from Washington and Pyongyang) in the meeting must do what they can to steer the discussion in a positive direction.

Kim and President Trump arrived in Singapore on Sunday ahead of Tuesday's historic summit. He was received by Singapore's Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan.

The US president hopes the summit will kick-start a process that eventually sees Mr Kim give up nuclear weapons.

Trump made the remarks at a working lunch with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the presidential palace Istana after their bilateral meeting during which the two leaders discussed everything from the summit preparations to the US' tariff threats.

However, others reported that the Air China Boeing 747 took off before the leader's jet did by an hour or two as a security measure to avoid making his mode of transportation known.

The summit - the first between a sitting United States president and any North Korean Leader - will mark a turnaround of relations between Trump and Kim after a long-running exchange of furious threats and insults.

The US president vowed to unleash "fire and fury" if Pyongyang kept threatening the US.

He also ridiculed Kim in a speech at the UN General Assembly as "Little Rocket Man" who in turn called Trump a "dotard".

"Maybe we'll start with the White House, what do you think?" he said when asked if Kim would be invited to Washington or his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

Hammering out a complete plan for North Korea's denuclearization would be "an impossible chore" at this summit, Michael O'Hanlon of the Brookings Institution told NPR.
