The competition's leadership teams now all are headed by women, including former Miss America winners. For the first time in its 97-year history, it's now being led entirely by women for the first time, and Carlson said contestants can wear "whatever they choose".
The Miss America pageant is re-branding itself as competition in which judges will now evaluate candidates based on their brains rather than their brawn.
She added: "That's what we're judging them on now".
The 2019 Miss American competition will take place in Atlantic City, New Jersey, on September 9 and air on ABC.
Carlson said that the organization will also allow contestants to wear whatever they'd like during the evening gown segment of the show and that it will be more inclusive to women with bodies of "all shapes and sizes".
