Pompeo: US hopes for 'major' North Korea nuclear disarmament by 2020

Washington: US President Donald Trump Wednesday congratulated himself on his summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, insisting that country is no longer a nuclear threat.

Trump, who returned to Washington early on Wednesday, hailed the meeting with Kim, the first between a sitting U.S. president and a North Korean leader, as a success that had removed the North Korean nuclear threat. If Abe's visit to Pyongyang proves hard, Japan is eyeing another scenario for Abe to meet Kim on the sidelines of the Eastern Economic Forum to be held in September in Vladivostok, if the North Korean leader attends, the paper said.

Pompeo faced immediate questioning from his traveling press about the content of the agreement with North Korea.

In the joint statement, North Korea only agreed to "work toward" denuclearization.

Several observers in the USA have expressed concerns that the summit will legitimize the odious Kim regime - the world's foremost pariah state, responsible for the operation of unconscionable gulags, currency counterfeiting, cyber theft, and even the manufacture of methamphetamines. Meeting with Kim Jong Un was an interesting and very positive experience.

The US has long resisted calls from North Korea and China for dual suspension, saying that the bilateral, planned, and transparent military drills are legal while North Korea's nuclear program is not.

Trump's tweets pointed to one of the chief gains at the summit from the U.S. point of view - that its scheduling and the establishing of a relationship between the President and Kim have eased fears that the two sides are on a slide toward a disastrous war.

Thirty-nine percent believe the summit has lowered the threat of nuclear war between the United States and nuclear-armed North Korea, slightly more than the 37 percent who said they did not believe it changed anything. "And, I'll be honest, we are being taken advantage of by virtually very one of those countries".

The President also added that North Korea's promise to complete denuclearization "will be verified", though the document the two leaders signed did not lay out details of that process. South Korean President Moon Jae-in recently promised to push for this amid improving ties with North Korea.

On the eve of the summit, Pompeo emphasized that sanctions would remain until North Korea delivered "CVID", and acronym for complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization.

Pompeo said Trump was alluding to the fact that it was the first time a sitting US president had met with Kim, adding that both leaders had a "blunt conversation" about the need for the communist state to rejoin the world community.

Japan has expressed concern, while South Korea said earlier it needed "to find out the exact meaning and intention of President Trump's remarks". But big, joint U.S.

A Japanese government source familiar with the matter told Reuters officials aimed to discuss a summit with North Korean officials at a regional security conference in Mongolia on Thursday and Friday.

With the test of an intercontinental ballistic missile with the range to strike anywhere in the United States, "the state nuclear force" was complete, she gushed.

Ri's image has often appeared on South Korean coverage of major events in North Korea, meaning some South Koreans, associating her with ominous developments, dread her appearance.

But this kind of disconnect between myth and reality seemed evident throughout President Trump's freewheeling news conference, suggesting his grand ambitions were not grounded in a full understanding of what and with whom he was dealing.

On Wednesday, Japan's Defense Minister Itsunori Onodera pointedly said the drills played a "vital role in East Asia's security". "He's clearly executing people", Baier said. The Korean War ended in 1953 without a peace treaty, leaving the United States and North Koreas in a technical state of war.
