Salmonella outbreak linked to pre-cut melon

Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development supervisors say 32 people in Michigan have become ill because of the outbreak.

The salmonella cases in IN and MI were traced to melon purchased at Kroger, Jay C and Payless grocers. If you have eaten pre-cut melon and have diarrhea, fever, and cramps, contact your health care provider.

Both stores have removed all cut melon associated with this outbreak, MI health officials say.

Whole melons are still safe to eat, according to the CDC.

The people who got sick reported getting chicks and ducklings from places such as feed supply stores, websites, hatcheries and from relatives, the CDC said in a news release. The list of states and stores could expand depending on the investigation.

Of the 60 cases of reported salmonella infection, 31 have resulted in hospitalization.

Kroger has announced a melon recall that will impact customers in IN and MI.

Kroger said on Thursday the CDC and the FDA notified them that multiple illnesses have been reported in connection with this outbreak.

The Centers for Disease Control is tracking a multi-state outbreak of salmonella linked to pre-cut melon that has already sickened 60 people, including 10 in Missouri.

The outbreak is believed linked to pre-cut melons, including fruit salad mixes with melon, sold at Walmart and Kroger stores.

It's not just Walmart pre-cut melon.

Of the 124 cases, 21 people have been hospitalized but no deaths have been reported.

The people who took ill came from IL (6), IN (11), MI (32), Missouri (10), and OH (1), the agency said. Illnesses starts on dates ranging from April 30 to May 28.

Salmonella can develop 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated food and usually lasts four to seven days. The elderly, infants, and those with weak immune systems are more likely to have a severe illness.
