Trump’s top economic adviser accuses Trudeau of ‘backstabbing’

President Donald Trump's top economic adviser says Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "really kind of stabbed us in the back" when Trudeau said at the end of the Group of Seven summit that Canada wouldn't be pushed around by the USA and its trade tariffs.

Trudeau used a media conference on Saturday to reject a United States demand for a sunset clause in the North American trade agreement, Nafta, that Trump has at different times pressed to abolish or renegotiate.

When asked if the president shares his views, Navarro said that the sentiment came from "Air Force One".

Trump was referring to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the tweet. The United States is not facing a unsafe dairy emergency, and it never will. Wildly exaggerated economic grievances, not national security, are driving Mr. Trump's trade agenda. The tariffs, which also take effect July 1, will last until the USA ends its trade action.

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned the United States "not to start a trade war between friends", as US President Donald Trump said he was heading to Canada for the G7 summit "to fight for our country on trade".
