Trump says North Korea 'no longer a nuclear threat'

There is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea, Donald Trump has tweeted, less than a day after the "epochal" first-ever summit with Kim Jong-un in Singapore.

Hours before the meeting, Trump had seemed more cautious in a Twitter post: "Meetings between staffs and representatives are going well and quickly..." The president had announced a halt in the drills after his meeting with Kim on Tuesday.

Trump's tweets followed a high-profile summit which yielded a renewed promise by Kim to "denuclearize" the Korean Peninsula but was scant on details.

But conservatives in South Korea slammed the summit, saying it failed to curb North Korea's nuclear ambitions.

At the start of his meeting with Kim, which began with a hand-shake, Trump said: "Working together we will get it taken care of..."

Last year Kim was "Little Rocket Man", according to Trump, and US officials regularly mentioned his likely role in the assassination of his half-brother with nerve agent in a Malaysian airport, as well as his uncle's execution.

But Wednesday's issue did provide some clues to North Korea watchers about how Kim is portraying the summit back home. Past year it tested long-range missiles that could reach the USA mainland, although it remains unclear if it has mastered the technology to deliver a nuclear warhead that could re-enter the atmosphere and hit its target.

"It is something that [North Korea] very much appreciated", he said, adding that the exercises cost too much and are seen as provocative by North Korea. "No longer - sleep well tonight!" the president wrote.

Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera said Japan saw "US-South Korean joint exercises and the US military presence in South Korea as vital to security in East Asia".

That concession to Kim appeared to catch the Pentagon and officials in Seoul off guard, and some South Koreans were alarmed. It has arguably gotten more brutal under the 34-year-old third current dictator, to whom Mr.

Mr Trump said the drills were "provocative" - even though the United States has previously defended them - and there were suggestions that USA allies in the region had not been forewarned of this move. "My meeting with Chairman Kim was honest, direct and productive", Trump said in a media availability following the meeting.
