Trump made the remarks during a press conference that followed his historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un on the Singaporean resort island of Sentosa.

On Tuesday, Trump stunned some watchers of the summit in Singapore when he said the United States would suspend joint exercises with South Korea, making a major concession to the North while seemingly receiving nothing in return.

"I believe that he wants to get it done", Trump said in an interview on ABC News, when asked about Kim's denuclearization commitment.

"I must have had just countless calls and letters and tweets, anything you can do - they want the remains of their sons back", he said. "But we'll be saving a tremendous amount of money".

"I think that's one bit of history that's important for the United States and all regional partners to remember".

The U.S. has stationed combat troops in South Korea since the end of the 1950-53 war and has used them in a variety of large-scale drills created to sharpen skills and test troops' ability to operate effectively with their South Korean partners.
