Trump withdrew from G7 statement to show toughness: Kudlow

"He was polarizing", Kudlow said during a Sunday morning appearance on CNN's "State of the Union". He called U.S. tariffs on its ally under the pretext of national security "kind of insulting" and said Canada would not be "pushed around".

In his interview Sunday, Kudlow accused Trudeau of making his comments for "domestic political consumption" and doing "a great disservice to the whole G7".

Within minutes of the official release of the document, Trump attacked Trudeau on Twitter over what he described as the prime minister's "false statements" during the closing G7 news conference - and the president announced the USA would no longer endorse the communique. "We make commitments and keep them", the presidency said, adding that "France and Europe maintain their support for this (G7) statement".

He also said that because of Trudeau's comments, he instructed US trade representatives to not sign the communique the G-7 leaders had agreed upon expressing the need for "free, fair, and mutually beneficial trade".

"[Trudeau] went out of his way to try to downplay tensions", said White House reporter Michael Shear.

Briefing reporters immediately before cutting short his stay at the conference in Quebec and heading to Singapore for a nuclear summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump firmly denied the G7 meeting had been contentious.

He described Trudeau as "meek" and "dishonest" and rescinded his earlier promise to sign the communique traditionally issued following G7 summits.

"We are convinced that a modernisation is perfectly possible, we are convinced that common sense will triumph", she said.

The United States would not back off from its tough stance in negotiations with trading partners, Trump said. The United States pays enormous tariffs on dairy.

In his press conference, Trudeau had spoken of retaliatory measures that Canada would take next month in response to Trump's decision to slap tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union. In one message, Trump threatened Canada's auto industry, a mainstay of the Ontario economy.
