United Nations condemns excessive Israeli force against Palestinians

HRW's call came shortly before the UN General Assembly adopted a nonbinding resolution that condemns Israel's use of excessive force and calls for measures to protect Palestinians in Gaza.

The United Nations General Assembly votes to adopt a draft resolution to deplore the use of excessive force by Israeli troops against Palestinian civilians at U.N. headquarters in NY, U.S., June 13, 2018.

The resolution would require the UN Secretary-General to submit a written report within 60 days of its adoption, with recommendations for the establishment of an worldwide protection mechanism for the Palestinian civilian population.

Haley has strongly opposed the U.N.'s myriad denunciations of Israel and recently vetoed a similar resolution in the Security Council.

The permanent observer of the Palestinian mission to the United Nations, ambassador Riyad Mansour said that the USA amendment was offered in "bad faith" and said that the "illegal, belligerent, military occupation is the primary source and root cause of the recurrent and emergent crises we face". But General Assembly President Miroslav Lajcak declared that under an assembly rule, a two-thirds majority was needed so the amendment failed.

The US is angrily condemning the resolution, with Nikki Haley declaring the resolution "morally bankrupt".

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, who introduced the amendment to blame Hamas, criticized the UNGA for focusing on violence in Israel instead of in Nicaragua, Yemen or Myanmar.

Israel's use of potentially lethal force against the protesters has drawn global criticism.

The General Assembly largely ignored Trump's threats at the time to cut off aid to any country that went against the United States and voted 128-9 to denounce the US president's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and declare it "null and void". It also seeks recommendations to protect Palestinian civilians.

"Our amendment takes a biased and unbalanced resolution and pushes the resolution in the right direction", she said. According to HRW, since the demonstrations started on March 20, at least 118 people were killed and 3,895 wounded by the Israeli troops, who use live rounds to quell the protests.

#UNGA adopts resolution on Protection of the Palestinian civilian population with vote of 120 countries in favour; 8 against; and 45 abstentions.

Kushner has kept a tight lid on the plan, but Greenblatt has been open in his criticisms of the Palestinian Authority for walking away from the pre-negotiations last December after Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Arab and Islamic nations then made a decision to seek a vote on virtually the identical resolution at Wednesday's emergency meeting of the 193-member General Assembly, where there are no vetoes.

The United Nations has passed a resolution calling for worldwide protection for civilians living in the occupied Palestinian territories. "What makes Gaza different for some is that attacking Israel is their favorite sport".

Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour said Tuesday night that he is lobbying 191 member states - all but the USA and Israel - and expects to win.
