Chelsea announce Conte departure

With the departure of Antonio Conte this week, Chelsea are ready to back Sarri in the market.

The 48-year-old Italian, who returned to pre-season training this week, had one year remaining on his contract.

Conte led Chelsea to the Premier League title in his first season in England in 2016-17 and followed up that achievement with the FA Cup triumph this year, but his relationship with the board became damaged beyond fix, highlighted by his repeated public and private complaints about transfer policy.

That is all about to change though with the Italian heading to London to sign a deal to replace Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge but to many on these shores, the former Napoli boss remains something of a mystery.

Media reports said Conte's departure would take to 85 million pounds the amount Chelsea has spent on paying off sacked managers - nearly the record fee Manchester United paid in 2016 for France midfielder Paul Pogba.
