Chelsea officially confirm Antonio Conte departure

Former Chelsea captain John Terry led the tributes to Antonio Conte, with the Italian's two year stint at Stamford Bridge coming to an end.

Aurelio De Laurentiis said the transfer did not depend on whether or not outgoing Napoli head coach Maurizio Sarri finalised terms to take over from Antonio Conte at Chelsea, despite confirming the deal was close to completion.

Asked if the ex-minister could be in No. 10 one day, he replied: "Well I am not pitting one against the other". He said: "I understand that people won't all agree, people have very strong views on the Brexit issue".

Only the pay was improved, though, with Conte's contract still running for just another two seasons - hardly a show of commitment by either the club or its manager.
