Chris Froome 'Banned' By Tour de France Organisers

Although Froome is allowed to compete under UCI rules while his salbutamol case is ongoing, an astonishing report in Le Monde claims the Tour does not want the saga damaging their reputation and will block the Brit from signing in for this year's race.

The Team Sky rider, who last week said he had every right to defend his title from July 7, tested positive for excessive levels of the asthma drug Salbutamol at last September's Vuelta a Espana.

From the outset, Tour de France organizer, Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), have argued their priority to is protect the integrity of the world's best-known cycling race, saying they do not want another victor with an asterisk next to his name on their honors list.

British rider Chris Froome has been reportedly banned from the Tour de France. Froome, 33, became the first Briton to win the race in the Giro's 101-year history after the 115km closed circuit race through the streets of the Italian capital.

Le Monde says Team Sky has already lodged an appeal to the court of arbitration of the French Olympic Committee, which will debate the case on Tuesday and is expected to issue a decision on the following day.

Froome clinched a stunning Giro d'Italia triumph in June to hold all three Grand Tour jerseys at the same time.

Froome would thereby join four other men to have won the Tour de France five times - Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain.

Amaury Sports Organisation (ASO), the organisers of the iconic Tour, refused to comment on the report although AFP has had confirmation of information they say backs their view that the defending champion should not be allowed to race. I have always said we would make known the general position of the UCI before the Tour and that will be the case. 'It begins on Saturday so we shall explain our position during the coming week'.
