Kevin Anderson Upsets Roger Federer at Wimbledon

He then let rip at Ramos for failing to sanction Nishikori for a similar act in the fourth set.

Novak Djokovic's clash against Kei Nishikori went more to script and saw the Serb advance to his first Grand Slam semi-final in nearly two years following a confident 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win. However, he fell once, this time in a 7-6 tiebreaker, to fall behind two sets to none.

Raonic, of Thornhill, Ont., fell two wins short of matching his best showing at Wimbledon - a runner-up finish in 2016.

Anderson will now move into his first semi-finals at the tournament; taking on the victor of John Isner and Milos Raonic for a place in a final against what may be Rafa Nadal or Novak Djokovic.

The Swiss refused to blame his surprise defeat on the decision to play the match on Court One rather than his customary Centre Court stage at the All England Club.

Federer, the No. 1 seed, had match point up 5-4 in the third set, but could not put Anderson, the No. 8 seed, away.

Six times Anderson was required to hold serve to stay alive and each time he was equal to the task.

Anderson, the first South African to reach the last eight since Wayne Ferreira in 1994, was steadfast though and did what no man had done at Wimbledon since last year's semi-final when he broke Federer's serve early in the second set.

Update: Federer not only dropped his first set, but his second as well.

Anderson then held the 24th game to clinch one of tennis' most famous victories.

But the three-time champion here turned the tables on Nishikori, holding his serve and then breaking in the next game to start a run of four successive games which allowed him to take the third set 6-2. "If you go out there with doubts or unsure what's going to happen, like I maybe did a little bit in that first set, it's not going to go your way".

Djokovic, seeded 12th, incurred a warning for throwing his racket and was clearly frustrated, complaining of "double standards" when Nishikori was not punished for a racket throw.

That didn't seem to affect his focus, though, and neither did a time violation he was given when serving at 4-2, 30-30 in the fourth set.

Djokovic secured that game with a forehand victor, then saved two game points on Nishikori's serve before converting his first match point with a forehand down the line.

Djokovic is a 12-time major champion who's been in something of a rut, due to right elbow troubles that lasted more than a year until he finally had surgery in February.

Meanwhile, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski is heading to the semifinals in women's doubles. "I probably won't have another 6-0 set this week, so I'll enjoy this one".

When he finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal at the US Open past year, he was the first South African man in a Slam final since Curren at the 1984 Australian Open.
