His cut fingernails are laid flat in a memorial case and span a length of over 31 feet, the height of a three-story building, according to a statement by Ripley's.

The record holder, from Pune, India, stopped trimming his fingernails in 1952 after he was told off by a teacher for messing around with a friend and accidentally breaking the teacher's nail. "Mr Chillal dedicated his life to something truly remarkable and Ripley's is the ideal home to honour his legacy", said Suzanne Smagala-Potts, PR Manager, Ripley's Believe It or Not!

Chillal recently travelled from India to New York City to have his nails removed for a museum display at Ripley's Believe It Or Not.

When asked by Guinness World Records in 2015 how his nails affect his life, Shridhar said they were extremely fragile and he needed to take care when sleeping.

Chillal made a decision to see how long he could grow them, even though the Guinness Book of World Records didn't exist then. The museum will host a "nail clipping ceremony" today where Chillal's nails will be cut.

The weight of the long nails left Mr Chillal's hand in a permanently fixed position, unable to separate his fingers. Odditorium in Times Square.
