Netflix Topples HBO in Emmy Nominations

Netflix was top platform this year with 112 nominations. Its latest season premiered a full year ago, and it won't begin its eighth and final season until 2019.

For the first time since 2001, HBO did not lead the nominations.

Its nominated shows include sci-fi drama Stranger Things, fictionalised royal biopic The Crown, comedy GLOW and western Godless.

While there was a major turnover in the best comedy series category this year, helped by the absence of three-time victor Veep and also involving the snub of five-time victor Modern Family, an even bigger seismic shift happened last year in the best drama series field.

"Game of Thrones" was out of the running in 2017 because the show aired later than usual. Meanwhile, HBO's Thrones and Westworld nabbed 22 and 21 nominations each, while the dark comedy Barry scored 13 nods. NBC shows earned 78 nods.

Several major stars not normally associated with television got their first Emmy nominations in 2018.

Saturday Night Live's Michael Che and Colin Jost will co-host 70th Emmy Awards, airing live on Monday, Sept. 17, at 8 p.m. ET on NBC. Although it's up for top series honors, it drew only three supporting actor bids for cast members Lena Headey, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Peter Dinklage.

It looked like it was going to be shut out of this year's Emmys after 65-year-old star Roseanne Barr - a vocal Trump backer who has tweeted far-right and conspiracy theorist views - was dropped by ABC for making a racist slur on Twitter. The last time there were three freshman series in the top comedy category was 2010 (Modern Family, Glee and Nurse Jackie). "This is the most diverse class of performer nominees we've had - we're nearly up to a third, which is fantastic", Maury McIntyre, TV academy president.

Both sides were expected to discuss the timeline and ways in which remains of American soldiers would be returned at the meeting. However, officials say it could be months before excavations can begin and years until the remains are identified.
