PM Modi slams Congress over lack of electrification

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday blamed earlier governments, particularly then Congress President Sonia Gandhi, for not fulfilling the promise of electrifying all households by 2009. He said about 14,500 villages out of 18,000 villages not electrified were in Eastern India and government have changed that. "We not only focussed on electrification but also reformed the distribution systems across the country", he said.

"Most of the villages were in remote, hilly areas, and in areas with poor connectivity". He said it was not easy to reach those villages but a dedicated team of people did it.

The interaction covered the beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Ghar Yojana - "Saubhagya" scheme, through video bridge.

The Saubhagya scheme was launched previous year in September under which about 3.6 crore unelectrified households would be electrified by March 31, 2019.
