Sagan, the three-time reigning world champion, came up short in the opening stage's sprint when he crossed second behind Fernando Gaviria, who won on his Tour debut.

"I'm feeling good. It's obviously never much fun crashing", he said in a lighthearted moment on the team bus.

"Team EF-Drapac managed to cut their losses for Rigoberto Uran - their powerful TTT team stopping the clock in 39'21" - while Team Sunweb also ensured they lost very little over the potentially tricky parcours.

"The only thing I can really understand from it was that Chris didn't even go to the adverse analytical finding, it didn't even get to that stage, he was asked to explain himself which he got given due process to do and he was cleared by the people that run the sport and doping agency and that's all we really know".

Gaviria was immediately congratulated by Colombia's cycling-mad president Juan Manuel Santos, who visited the Tour de France previous year and who sent his best wishes via Twitter.

Smith was focussed on winning the climber's polka dot jersey, and once he had secured that after the only classified climb came early in the stage, he was called back to the bunch to help his team.

But Gaviria was involved in a group pileup inside the three-kilometre zone that neutralizes the impact of accidents and could do nothing to stop Sagan from claiming a six-second overall lead.

The Tour remains in western France for Stage 3 on Monday with a 35.5-kilometre team time trial that starts and finishes in Cholet. "It wasn't ideal to throw 51 seconds away but we have taken some good time back on some of the other GC (general classification) guys today".

The other members of BMC are Patrick Bevin, Damiano Caruso, Simon Gerrans, Stefan Kung and Michael Schar. "To win the stage with a team like we have here, and especially with the passing of Andy Rihs, is special", Porte said. The Frenchman got warmly welcomed by the people on the sides of the road and got an advantage of more than four minutes with the peloton. "It just shows that we are here, too, and let's get it on".

Van Avermaet also wore the yellow jersey for three days on the 2016 Tour.

Tonight's fourth stage is a 195-km flat ride from La Baule to Sarzeau.
