Suspected Gunman Barricaded Inside Los Angeles Trader Joe's


A woman was killed in a supermarket in Los Angeles in the United States on Saturday, after police officers chased a man who had shot his grandmother and girlfriend.

The victim's brother identified her. Eldorado worked at Trader Joe's for four to five years, Albert Corado said.

"I'm sad to say she didn't make it".

Gene Evin Atkins was booked into jail shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday morning, according to jail records.

The gunman was apprehended, and his grandmother was in critical condition at a hospital, the Times reported.

The episode began around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday when Atkins got into an argument at a South Los Angeles residence with his grandmother and allegedly shot her seven times, police said.

Authorities said Atkins fired at officers during the pursuit and that they returned gunfire after he crashed and ran into the Trader Joe's.

"We have successfully taken the suspect into custody without incident".

"Our hearts are broken over what happened today", the statement said.

The driver got out, and police started firing at him as he ran towards the supermarket.

Kohles said he was "scared stiff" as a staff member made him to lay flat on the floor.

The situation is still on-going with an unknown number of persons still inside.

Some people managed to escape the store by climbing through a window down a rope ladder, according to video footage. Among them was a police officer carrying a small child, he said.

About three hours after the ordeal began, negotiations led to the man "handcuffing himself and coming outside and surrendering to SWAT officers", the police chief said.

Officers tracked the auto using a stolen-vehicle tracking system and tried to stop the man in Hollywood, but he refused to pull over, Moore said. Devin Field, a writer for "Jimmy Kimmel Live", tweeted he was walking inside the store when a auto crashed into the entrance and a man "got out shooting".

During the shootout, the suspect was wounded in the arm, Mayor Eric Garcetti said, adding that one woman was shot in the store and later declared dead at the scene.
