It took it a few days, but Tropical Storm Chris strengthened into a hurricane Tuesday as it started to move away from the USA coast.

The Met Office are warning of the chance of some showers on Wednesday afternoon on what is set to be a cloudy day for long periods, with the outlook for Friday including the chance of thunderstorms.

Chris is expected to create large swells along the east coast, which can result in life-threatening surf and rip currents.

At 4 p.m. CDT Tuesday, the National Weather Service in Miami said the storm was about 205 miles (330 kilometers) east-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph (137 kph).

Nicola Maxey, Senior Press Officer for the Met Office, explains that this sort of weather activity is typical for this time of year and that although the Storm is expected to turn into a hurricane by later today, by the time it reaches the United Kingdom it will be an ex-hurricane.

"A continued northeastward motion accompanied by a steady increase in forward speed is expected through Thursday night.", forecasters said.

Many North Carolina beaches were closed to swimming on Monday due to heavy surf and risky rip currents, according to a statement from the governor's office. "However, the disturbance is expected to turn northward over the western Atlantic on Wednesday where upper-level winds could become a little more conducive for the regeneration of a tropical cyclone later this week".
