Trump narrows list for Kennedy replacement; will announce pick July 9

Headlines this week were dominated by news that Justice Anthony Kennedy, a swing vote on the Supreme Court, will retire next month and that a man has been charged with killing five people at the Capital Gazette newsroom in Annapolis. With the successful push for Justice Neil Gorsuch still fresh in their minds, their effort this time is expected to follow a similar playbook.

"We have to pick one that's going to be there 40 years, 45 years", Trump said at a rally on Thursday. Trump welcomed Republicans Chuck Grassley, Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Democrats Joe Manchin, Joe Donnelly and Heidi Heitkamp as part of the effort.

In an interview with Fox News host Maria Bartiromo, Trump said his advisers have told him he should not ask anyone on his potential list of Supreme Court nominees whether they would overturn Roe v Wade, the 1973 decision that effectively legalized abortion in the United States.
