The 23-time Grand Slam champion dropped her first set of the championships but came through 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Williams dug deep to deny Camila Giorgi a famous victory with a fighting 3-6 6-3 6-4 quarterfinal comeback win over unseeded Italian on Tuesday (Wednesday NZ Time).

Her star power grew during a match against Serena Williams in the quarterfinals when she won the opening set and challenged in the third.

When Williams was asked her expectations after winning her first match at Wimbledon in two years, she said, "Not only do I expect to win, I expect to win emphatically".
