A lawyer for Viktor and Amalija Knavs revealed the Slovenian couple, who had already been living in the U.S. as permanent residents, took the citizenship oath in New York City.

Viktor and Amalija Knavs, who are from Slovenia, had been living in the United States with green cards and have been frequently spotted in Washington since their son-in-law assumed the presidency. Wildes said the first lady sponsored her parents for their green cards, and once eligible, they applied for citizenship.

Viktor and Amalija made an appearance with their attorney, Michael Wildes, outside the federal building in Manhattan where they took the citizenship oath.

Currently, the majority of green card recipients receive them via family sponsorship.
