Israel kills two Hamas gunmen in Gaza, sides dispute circumstances

A statement by the Israeli military said: "A short while ago, terrorists fired shots towards IDF (Israel Defence Forces) soldiers near the northern Gaza Strip from a Hamas post".

Meanwhile, the Israeli occupation army said that it shelled a Hamas post in response to firing from the Palestinian enclave that targeted Israeli troops.

"The (military) clarified to the ship's passengers that they are violating the legal naval blockade and that any humanitarian merchandise can be transferred to Gaza through the Port of Ashdod", the statement said.

Ran Goldstein, the head of the Israel-based Physicians for Human Rights, told the state-run Israeli Broadcasting Corporation that Hamas had told him that "the video sent by the family of Avraham Mengistu to their son about two years ago has been passed on".

Tensions between Israel and Gaza have escalated since weekly border protests started on March 30, which left more than 150 Palestinians dead and 17,500 others injured, according to statistics released by the Gaza Health Ministry. At least 160 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli fire, including at least 120 in protests near the border fence.
