Rescuers used diggers and heavy machinery to clear debris and search for survivors on Monday after a magnitude 6.9 quake killed at least 98 people on Indonesia's resort island of Lombok, prompting a tourist exodus.

That 6.4-magnitude quake left 17 people dead, damaged hundreds of buildings and triggered landslides that briefly trapped trekkers on popular mountain hiking routes.
Many buildings are thought to have been damaged by the quake in Lombok's main city of Mataram, said Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, spokesman for Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency.
"There are challenges: the roads were damaged, three bridges were also damaged, some locations are hard to reach and we don´t have enough personnel". A distraught Muhamad Juanda said on Tuesday that "people were praying in two rows; there are about 50 people in each row so a total of 100 people praying inside the mosque".
"Many injured people are being treated outside hospitals and health clinics because the buildings were damaged", Nugroho said.
