US Senator Rand Paul Invites Russian Lawmakers to Washington


A prominent USA lawmaker has said during a visit to Moscow that the United States needs to have more dialogue with Russian Federation and keep communication lines open.

Senator Paul will meet with his counterparts from the Russian Federation Council Foreign Affairs Committee and the Russian foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov.

"Engagement is vital to our national security and peace around the world".

"I think this is incredibly important, " Paul said after the high-profile sit-down.

The Texas senator's trip comes during a tense time for U.S. -Russia relations.

President Trump continues to face charges that he colluded with Russia to win the 2016 presidential election, particularly after tweeting this weekend that his son Donald Trump Jr. met with a Russian lawyer during the election to get dirt on his opponent.

Eight prominent US intelligence groups, including the CIA, FBI, NSA, Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security, independently concluded that Russian Federation did meddle in the 2016 elections. "Meanwhile, my Trump-defending opponent Don Huffines made a decision to go on a Moscow adventure this week with Rand Paul instead, to "improve parliamentary relations" with Russian Federation".

It was "opposition research", Trump said, not collusion.

United States sanctions on Iran's energy sector are set to be re-imposed after a 180-day "wind-down period" ending on November 4. Oil is being supported this week after Saudi crude production unexpectedly fell in July and US drilling appeared to slow.

"They're not going to admit it in the same way we're not going to admit we were involved in the Ukrainian elections or the Russian elections", Paul said.

Senior Russian lawmaker Konstantin Kosachev, who was also in the room, reiterated the Russian position that "there was no interference in 2016", adding "there of course will not be any interference in the elections this year".

Trump has invited Putin to the White House, a move largely panned by lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Paul headed a USA delegation, which includes member of the Texas State Senate Don Huffines and representatives of the Cato Institute, a public policy research organization.
