US senators ask Assange to testify in Russia probe

WikiLeaks said Wednesday that its founder Julian Assange was "considering" a request by a US Senate committee to testify about alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US elections.

There was also no immediate confirmation from the Senate committee. Richard Burr (R-NC) and Mark Warner (D-VA).

In an exclusive interview with Colombian broadcaster NTN24, Ecuador's President Lenin Moreno Moreno discussed the conditions in which he would ask WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to leave the Ecuadorean embassy in London.

The organisation's Twitter account stated: "WikiLeaks" legal team say they are "considering the offer but testimony must conform to a high ethical standard'".

In the invitation letter, dated August 1, the the Senate Intelligence Committee asks if Assange is "available for a closed interview" at a "mutually agreeable time and location".

"Neither Robert Mueller's team nor the US Senate Intelligence Committee has bothered to contact WikiLeaks or me, in any manner, ever", Assange wrote on Twitter in September past year.

He fears that if he leaves the building he will be extradited to the U.S. for questioning over the activities of WikiLeaks, which has published reams of military and diplomatic secrets.

Under Moreno, speculation had been growing over the possibility of Assange being ejected from the embassy as the Ecuadorean government increased pressure, first by suspending his internet and phone access in March then by withdrawing security in May.

The Swedish investigation has since been dropped but Assange stayed in the embassy, as he still faces arrest by British police for skipping bail six years ago.
