USA imposes new sanctions on Russian Federation over nerve agent poisoning


The US Government said it would impose fresh sanctions on Russia after it determined that Moscow had used a nerve agent against a former Russian agent and his daughter in the UK.

The 1991 Chemical and Biological Weapons Control and Warfare Elimination Act "requires the president to make a determination with respect to whether a country has used chemical or biological weapons in violation of worldwide law or has used lethal chemical or biological weapons against its own nationals, " the State Department said.

Mr Skripal and his daughter Yulia were found unconscious on a bench in a shopping centre in Salisbury after being exposed to the nerve agent novichok.

She said sanctions would take effect on or around August 22.
