West Nile positive mosquitoes found in Peel Region

There are no confirmed human cases of the virus in the region so far this year. Test results later confirmed that West Nile virus was the culprit.

The department of Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living said the case was found in a child under 10 in the Southern Health region in the province.

A Canyon County man in his 50s has tested positive for West Nile virus, health officials announced on Thursday.

In a very few cases, West Nile fever leads to encephalitis or meningitis with associated neck stiffness, confusion, or seizures.

Health officials say infected mosquitoes can transmit the virus to people and other animals.

Health Director Dennis Johnson said no mosquito has tested positive in town this year and only one tested positive last year. According to DEP's web site, Schuylkill County is marked as "High Risk" and is consider a Hot Zone for the West Nile Virus .

Despite the low numbers of nuisance mosquitoes this summer, the numbers of infected Culex tarsalis continue to increase. The most vulnerable people are those who are at least 50 or have weakened immune systems.

"With high levels of [West Nile Virus] in mosquitoes and the recent rains leading to even more mosquitoes, it's important for residents of Fairfax County to take precautions to protect themselves and their families", the Fairfax County Health Department said in a news release. Symptoms usually develop between two and 15 days after a person has been bitten and can include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, body aches, skin rash and swollen lymph glands.

"Public Health thanks the community for being diligent in removing standing water and eliminating the places where mosquitoes can breed", Callanan said.
